Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from captain Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on the final day to move to an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

A loss will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
