European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
