A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such drugs should be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the medication explain a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
