Federal authorities have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, submitted to federal court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, investigations and possible further challenges.
